Apprentice Finalist Turns Down Birmingham FC Job
Monday, September 01st, 2008
Apprentice finalist Claire Young has made the shock decision to turn down a lucrative job with Birmingham Football Club.
After much heart searching she has decided that her fortune lies in an entrepreneurial career where she can pursue her media, public speaking and new business interests which include advising the troubled General Trading Company.
“It was a very tough decision,” said the gutsy runner-up of this year’s hit television show, “I was very interested in the job and know it would have been exciting but I wanted the freedom of running my own business.”
Birmingham FC Manager Karen Brady was a surprise guest to help assess the finalists and was instantly struck by Claire’s personal and business talents. She famously even warned feisty Amstrad boss Sir Alan Sugar on camera: “If you don’t offer her a job then I will.”
True to her word she invited Claire for top level discussions about a position with the football club. But the former retail buyer who lives in South London has decided that other opportunities which have come knocking in recent weeks since the programmed ended are more up her street. Nevertheless Karen, was the first to congratulate Claire on her decision and wish her well.
Whilst delighted to be offered a prestigious position at Birmingham FC, Claire – nicknamed the Rottweiler for her tenacious approach – will run her own business consultancy.
Claire has a grounding in marketing, merchandising and commercial sales with top companies and before the programme she was earning more or less the salary she was competing for in the televised competition as a buying manager for Superdrug.
She relishes the excitement that self employment brings and anticipates that experience which includes being a brand leader at L'Oreal and sales at Colgate will help her with her advisory role helping The General Trading Company through their next stage after the recent administration.
“It is an exciting business with plenty to look forward to and I look forward to assisting others to realising the promise and making the most of past success,” she said.
